League suspends Patriots RB Faulk for opening game

The Patriots will lose the services of backup RB Kevin Faulk for their regular-season opener against the Chiefs. The league suspended Faulk for one game and fined him two game checks for violating its substance-abuse policy. His suspension begins today, and he’ll be able to return to practice Sept. 8.
In July, a Lafayette, La., judge sentenced Faulk to one year’s probation for misdemeanor marijuana possession charges after the 32-year-old running back had been issued a summons at a concert in the Cajundome in February.
The versatile Faulk is being pressed by offseason acquisition LaMont Jordan for the Patriots’ backup RB job behind Laurence Maroney, and the suspension isn’t likely to help Faulk’s job security.
