This season the Fantasy Doctor will answer a few of our readers' fantasy questions on an almost daily basis, Monday through Friday. Send your questions to the Doc at the address above.
Hey Doc,
I'm in a keeper league (keep 6 players out of a 16-player roster). It's a TD heavy league. I've been considering trading Ryan Grant. With his contract issue still not resolved and the Brett Favre fiasco ongoing, what receivers should I expect to get back in a straight-up trade? My other players I'm keeping are QB Peyton Manning, RBs LaDainian Tomlinson & Brian Westbrook and WRs Torry Holt & Wes Welker. I could use another strong receiver to help round out my starting lineup (1 QB, 2 RBs, 3 WRs, PK). Or would I be better off keeping Grant and trading Westbrook for a receiver? Thanks in advance.
— Duane Gudim
Let me get this straight, Duane, you have both L.T. and Westbrook on your team? How in the world did you pull that off? With RBs like that — and throw in Peyton Manning for good measure — I don't think it matters who else you put in your starting lineup. But to answer your question, I definitely think you should try to deal Grant. Besides using him as a bye-week fill-in, you're never going to be starting him, and it wouldn't hurt to add another good WR to your already solid tandem. If you could trade him for a top-five or even a top-10 wideout, your starting unit would be unstoppable. Man, remind me never to join this keeper league.
Hey Doc,
If Tatum Bell is the starter in Detroit, is he worthy of being a 5th-round keeper, meaning he would be my 5th-round pick? I have been waiting for him to do something for years.
— "Frustrated" Mark Guse
Mark, as a Tatum Bell owner I can see why you're frustrated. However, don't let your frustration cloud your judgment: There's absolutely no way you can keep Bell as your fifth-round pick. Even if he were the Lions' full-time starting back, it's debatable whether he'd be worth taking in the fifth round. As nothing more than a timeshare guy, which is what he's going to be this season, Bell probably should go in about the 10th round. Detroit drafted Kevin Smith with the idea of making him their workhorse back, so expect them to give the rookie a very prominent role right away. Bell still will play and might even have a decent outing here or there, but you could do a lot better with your fifth-round choice.
