This season the Fantasy Doctor will answer a few of our readers' fantasy questions on an almost daily basis, Monday through Friday. Send your questions to the Doc at the address above.
Hi, I have the third pick in my fantasy league this year. Usually I get No. 6 or 7 but I got lucky this year. I know for certain who is going with the first and second picks. The first is LaDainian Tomlinson and the second is Tom Brady. I am in between a few players — Randy Moss, Brian Westbrook, Adrian Peterson or Peyton Manning. What should I do?
— Bill
Bill, you're in a pretty enviable position. Not only do you have the third pick, but you already know who's going one and two. To me, your choice is between Westbrook and Peterson. There are strong arguments to be made for both, but I personally would draft A.P. Even though our draft board has Westbrook ranked one spot higher, Peterson's game-breaking ability and enormous upside give him a slight edge in my book. Westbrook is an awesome dual threat who can score as well, but I think he peaked with last season's huge numbers and will come back to earth a bit. A.P., on the other hand, has played only 14 games as a pro and already looks like one of the league's best backs. If he continues to improve and get more opportunities, the sky is the limit for him.
Doc, I could really use some advice deciding who to keep this year. I have to keep two players and I lose the draft choice the round above where they were drafted the previous year. I'm really debating between Randy Moss for a sixth-round pick, Jamal Lewis for a seventh-rounder, Selvin Young for a 15th, or David Garrard for a 16th. Willie Parker and Laurence Maroney are also options, but I don't think they're worth the first- or second-round pick I'd have to give up to keep them. What's your professional opinion? Thanks in advance.
— Josh
Interesting dilemma, Josh. First off, I agree with you that neither Parker nor Maroney is worth keeping for that steep of a price. To me, those guys are third-round talents at best. I really think that in this case, your best keeper options are your best guys, Moss and Lewis. Coming off his 23-TD season, Moss is a borderline first-rounder, so getting him for a sixth-round pick is a no-brainer. Using that same logic, Lewis had a renaissance '07 campaign and has proven that he's back to being an impact fantasy player. He'll probably go in the second round in most drafts, making him a great value in your situation. I can see why you'd be tempted to keep Young or Garrard, but you can always hunt for other sleepers in the late rounds. It's best to hold on to your studs.
