This season the Fantasy Doctor will answer a few of our readers' fantasy questions on an almost daily basis, Monday through Friday. Send your questions to the Doc at the address above.
Doc, I need to keep three players out of: Steven Jackson, Reggie Wayne, Antonio Gates, Ronnie Brown, Earnest Graham, and Matt Hasselbeck. I definitely think that I am going to keep Jax and Wayne, after that I'm lost. I know Gates is one of the top TEs but is he worth keeping coming off the injury and with inconsistent play of Philip Rivers? I picked up Ronnie at the end of last season in hopes that he can come back and do what he was doing at the start of last season, but is he healthy enough and how does Ricky Williams play into his possible stats? And Graham, they have so many RBs down in Tampa, who will get the carries? Your help is needed because I can't make a decision. Thanks!
— Tony
Well, Tony, first off, Jackson and Wayne are surefire keepers. They're each among the best at their position and should be in store for great seasons. As for your remaining choice, I'd start by eliminating Graham and Hasselbeck from consideration. I don't think Graham will match last year's stats with the Bucs' growing stable of RBs, and Hasselbeck is down to one decent receiver heading into Week One. So, since I don't like to gamble with keeper picks, I'll recommend retaining Gates. Sure, he has the toe injury, but he easily could be back for the Chargers' opener. Brown also looks likely to play in Week One, but how long will his surgically repaired knee hold up? He's a bit too risky for me to use a keeper pick on, especially when you have only three.
Hey Doc, I'm in a 14-team re-draft league. All TDs are worth 6 points with distance bonuses. I have a QB question. I'm thinking of loading up on RBs and WRs — we draft 3 and start 2 of each — in the first 6 rounds. I'm thinking of picking Matt Leinart AND Kurt Warner. With a suspect running game and talent at WR, I will have a top-tier QB regardless of which of them starts. Week 7, their bye week, could be decision time, or maybe I play a week with no QB. Am I crazy or is this a good idea?
— Mark
Given the news this week that Leinart has a firm hold on the job and likely won't be substituted for, I'd probably abandon this idea, Mark. I'm not convinced that either guy should be considered a "top-tier" QB, but at least we know that Leinart will get the opportunity to play. And as long as he isn't awful or doesn't get hurt, Warner could spend the entire season on the bench. If you're dead-set on drafting Leinart, you really should be sure to get another QB just in case Leinart struggles. He's had a good camp so far, but who knows what will happen once the season starts. If Warner is around in the late rounds and you want to grab him as your No. 3 QB, that wouldn't be a bad move.
