This season the Fantasy Doctor will answer a few of our readers' fantasy questions on an almost daily basis, Monday through Friday. Send your questions to the Doc at the address above.
Doc,
I am in a keeper league and will be keeping Joseph Addai. I have the #9 pick in a 12-player keeper league. My question is would it be wise to draft Drew Brees, who had 400 fantasy points last year, over a RB? The NFL landscape seems to be changing with more and more teams going with two running backs, so I thought taking Brees wouldn't be a bad idea. In round #2 and #3, I could get my WRs like Marques Colston or Andre Johnson. IMO, having Addai along with Brees, Colston and Andre Johnson — if they fall to me — wouldn't be bad, would it? What's your opinion? Thanks for your help!
— Gary Hendri
Well, Gary, with one top-notch RB already on your roster in Addai and many of the others likely to be kept, I have no issue with you taking Brees in the first round. Why take a second-tier RB when you can get a top-five QB? Plus, there seems to be fewer reliable QBs this season than at any time I can remember. If you have Brees, you're set at that position, which is a huge relief. It wouldn't be a bad idea to grab a RB in the second or third round, though, as you'd like to have some quality depth at that spot.
In a touchdown league I have the first pick. Each team has to keep 2 players, but they cannot be of the same position. My best 3 players are Peyton Manning, Clinton Portis and Andre Johnson. The best 2 players coming available will be Joseph Addai and Reggie Wayne. My initial thought was to keep Manning and Portis and pick up Wayne because it's tough in our league without a top receiver (Johnson hurt me last year being out for several weeks). Although, I hate to pass on Addai, who is a a possible future keeper. Is it more promising to go with my original plan, or take Addai instead of Wayne because the likelihood of him scoring more TDs is better?

Since it's a TD league, Addai appears to be the wiser choice. Had it been a yardage league, I could see your argument for taking Wayne, but not in this format. He's a great yardage producer, going over 1,000 in each of the last four seasons, but he's never been a TD machine. Addai, on the other hand, scored a whopping 15 times in '07. I figure the young RB will keep improving with age, so it wouldn't be surprising if he matched or even bettered that total this season. I think a trio of Manning, Portis and Addai would be very solid for you.
