This season the Fantasy Doctor will answer a few of our readers' fantasy questions on an almost daily basis, Monday through Friday. Send your questions to the Doc at the address above.
Greetings Doc,
I'm writing to get a little advice on keepers. We keep two in our league in the round that the player was drafted the previous year. So I decided on Tony Romo in Round 9; however, I am torn between Terrell Owens in 3rd round or Marion Barber in 5th round. I was leaning towards Barber because of the "value" but Andre Johnson, Marques Colston, Randy Moss, Chad Johnson and Santonio Holmes are already off the board. So if I pass on Owens, then I miss out on a stud WR to match with Romo. Yet I feel Barber is poised for a big year with Julius Jones gone. What say you?
— Derek
Well, it sounds like we have a Cowboys fan here. I say this, Derek: Go with your gut and keep Barber. You're right, he is going to have a big year as Dallas' workhorse, and the fact that you can keep him while only sacrificing a fifth-round pick is incredible value. T.O. in the third round is good value as well, but there will be other top WRs you can grab early on. Guys you didn't mention as being kept include Braylon Edwards, Larry Fitzgerald, Reggie Wayne and T.J. Housh. Any of those WRs is a fine No. 1 option, so target one of them in the first couple of rounds and you should be good to go.
My dilemma is who to keep between Drew Brees and Ryan Grant. It's a 2-keeper, 12-team league and my other keeper is Marshawn Lynch. I'm not yet sure what position I will be drafting, but I know that in my division the other quarterback keepers could potentially be Tom Brady and Tony Romo. I feel like I may need a stud QB to keep up. What do you think?
— Lance Dynamite
That certainly is a dilemma, Mr. Dynamite, and the answer somewhat depends on your league's scoring system. If you're in a league with traditional scoring, Grant probably would be the better keeper. There aren't a whole lot of RBs who will get the ball as often as he will this season, and I'm guessing that nearly all the other top backs are being kept. Holding on to Grant and Lynch would give you a pair of top-10 RBs. On the other hand, if you're in a format that favors QBs and passing stats, then maybe Brees would be the guy to retain. He's a top-five QB who's basically a lock for 4,000 yards and a bunch of TDs. If those kinds of numbers would get you a ton of points in your league, then Brees has a lot of value. If not, then you could hold off and take a different QB later. All in all, if I had to pick one, I'd choose Grant.
