Hi, I need your help already and the season hasn't even started. A guy wants to trade me Chad Johnson for Darren McFadden. Here are my starting WRs and RBs: Terrell Owens, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Anquan Boldin, Brian Westbrook and Rudi Johnson. Should I pull the trigger even though I don't really need Johnson? Thanks.
— Jeff, Dublin, Ga.
Wow, trades being thrown around already? It's only mid-August! Anyway, this is a very interesting deal. On paper, it would certainly appear that Chad Johnson is the better fantasy player of the two. But in your situation, this trade might not help your team. If you keep McFadden, your top two backs would be he and Westbrook — a pair with enormous potential. And you'd still have T.O., Housh and Boldin at WR — a pretty formidable trio, I'd say. Now if you make this trade, sure, you'll have four awesome wideouts, but will you be able to start them all? If not, it's a waste to have one of those guys on the bench. And your backfield would lose some depth if Rudi Johnson is your No. 2 guy. I think the smartest move for you would be to stay put with the solid core of players you have.
Doc,
You gotta help me out. Symptoms: cold sweats, blurred vision, restricted breathing & upset stomach. I'm hoping you have the cure …
Keeper league, keep 2, lose the pick for the round drafted, can't keep 2 at same position. Steven Jackson with my first-rounder, Marshawn Lynch with my 9th. I'm keeping Romo, whom I got in the 10th. I'll be picking 4th this year. My question, do I take the obscene value of Lynch for a 10th, or keep Jackson and give up my first. I'm not sure who will be available in the first, as we haven't locked down the keepers yet. It's only an 8-team league, so there will be SOMETHING, but I'm feeling the pressure. I'd really like to have a pick in the first, but I'm desperately afraid that letting Jackson go is the wrong move. Help me, Doc, before I gotta make a trip to the emergency room!!!
— Dave, San Carlos, Calif.
I can understand your concern in letting a player of Jackson's caliber go, Dave, but you may have to. The fact that you can keep Lynch, who'll be a first-round pick in many leagues, for a ninth-round choice is insane. To me, it's a no-brainer that he has to be your guy. I really like him to break out in Year Two as Buffalo's go-to guy. S-Jax, meanwhile, is still holding out, remember. Even if the Rams get him signed soon, it'll probably take him awhile to be game-ready, likely resulting in a slow start. If you give him up, you'll also get to keep your first-round pick, which you can use to get another top player. All told, the gap between Jackson and Lynch is not big enough to sacrifice a first-rounder for. Keep Romo, Lynch and your first pick.
