OK Doc, same issues, different season. I have a star WR who isn't pulling his weight and several running backs who are on the fence week-to-week. It seems whoever I leave on the bench has the big game! My options at WR are Braylon Edwards, Anquan Boldin, Lee Evans and Bryant Johnson. In my mind, Boldin is a given, but am I crazy to start Evans over Edwards? Evans should have a good game against St. Louis and I'm losing faith in the Browns quickly. For RBs, I have LenDale White, Michael Turner, Chris Johnson, Darren Sproles and Julius Jones (bye week). Again, I think Turner is a given. After that, which Tennessee back is the better choice? Johnson has the big-game potential, but White has been getting it done consistently.

I'm sure you're not the only one dealing with these issues, Jason, as many early-round picks have been frustrating so far. At wide receiver, I agree that Boldin is a must-start, and I'm going to say that Evans should be your other starter this week. I love his matchup against the Rams, who haven't been able to stop any opponent yet. I think Evans could have a big game Sunday. Edwards could too, but his awful start and tenuous QB situation have me hesitant to recommend him. At running back, I see Chris Johnson as an every-week starter until he proves otherwise. The rookie has produced in all three games thus far, and I think he'll continue to do so even in a tough matchup with the Vikings. I don't think White will have much success running into the middle of Minnesota's line, but Johnson could beat the Vikings on the outside. I'd start him along with Turner.
Doc,
I've got a problem and need help. I've got Peyton Manning on bye and need to pick a QB from the waiver wire. This is a yardage-based league. Which is my best option? All are playing at home:
Kerry Collins against the Vikings.
Trent Green against the Bills.
Brian Griese against the Packers.
I'm leaning toward Green but might just flip a three-sided coin and have just as good a chance at getting this one correct.
— Mike
This is a good example of how much of a killer that bye weeks can be, Mike. Instead of starting a sure thing in Manning this week, you're going to be stuck with one of these three mediocre guys at QB. Based on matchups and what I saw last week, I'd recommend Griese ahead of the other two. I know he wasn't very efficient against the Bears, but just knowing that he's capable of having a 400-yard game makes him the most intriguing option. Plus, the Packers will be without CB Al Harris, which should help the Bucs' WRs get open more easily. Since I don't trust Green in his first start, and Collins just doesn't excite me with that ordinary receiving corps, I'd roll the dice on Griese this week.
