Doc, is it time to administer last rites to Chad Ocho Cinco? I can cut him and add Kevin Curtis, Bernard Berrian, Kevin Walter, Steve Breaston or Justin Gage. Should I move on or keep Chad on life support a little longer?
— Glenn
I don’t know about you, Glenn, but I don’t think the name-change thing has worked out too well for Ocho Cinco. It’s really shocking how poor his production has been through five games — 14 catches for 159 yards and one TD. Sure, part of it can be blamed on the struggles of the Bengals’ offense as a whole and the lackluster play of QB Carson Palmer, but that’s no excuse for C.O.C. to have numbers as paltry as these at this point in the season. However, even with all that said, I still wouldn’t consider cutting him in fantasy leagues. No. 85 has as much upside as any receiver in the league, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he gets things turned around in the near future. Plus, none of the available wideouts you mentioned excites me enough to make that drastic of a move. It might be best to keep Ocho Cinco on the bench until he gets back on track, but don’t totally pull the plug on him.
Hey Doc! Been reading your column for a long time and really need some help this time. My team is off to a bad start and I've been offered Laurence Maroney and Lee Evans for Reggie Bush. The league is a PPR league where you start 2 RBs and 2 WRs and a flex RB/WR. My WR production has been awful so far with Andre Johnson, Marques Colston, Bernard Berrian and Bobby Engram as my guys. My other RBs are Matt Forte, Jonathan Stewart, DeAngelo Williams and Felix Jones. Will Maroney improve? Will Lee Evans continue his great year? Will Bush continue to perform at such a high level? Help!!
— Artie
This is not a deal that I see benefiting your team, Artie. In a PPR league, Bush is one of the most valuable commodities. He already has 38 receptions, putting him on pace for a ridiculous 122 for the season. That’s a total that very well could lead the NFL. Meanwhile, Evans may be a great yardage producer, but he’s doesn’t rack up a lot of catches. He only has 16 through five games, putting him on track for 51. In this format, that could hurt you. As for Maroney, I’m basically ready to write him off for this year. He has a miniscule 93 rushing yards in ’08 and has seen his role in the offense diminish greatly. He’s certainly not a guy to trade for. I recommend that you stick with Bush and watch him pile up the receptions.
