AFC East sleepers

Ricky Williams is back in Miami and ready to fill in for Brown

By PFW staff

First in an eight-part series

“Sleeper” is firmly ensconced in the fantasy football lexicon. Your definition of a sleeper may vary slightly from ours, but we can all agree the ideal sleeper (1) outperforms his draft position, (2) is drafted relatively late and (3) becomes a key part of your fantasy team.

With this in mind, here’s a sleeper candidate to watch on each of the AFC East teams:

AFC East

Buffalo WR James Hardy
Don’t go sleeping on Hardy. Sure, rookie receivers tend to struggle making an impact in the NFL, but there’s perhaps not a single rookie receiver tailor-made for immediate success more than the 6-foot-5 former Hoosier. Not only is he penciled in as an opening-week starter, but he’s the type of towering target who’ll quickly become QB Trent Edward’s favorite target in the red zone.

Dolphins RB Ricky Williams

 Ricky Williams

Miami — RB Ricky Williams
Williams is back in Miami and ready for lift-off … again. With Ronnie Brown rehabbing from his torn ACL, Williams impressed the coaching staff throughout the offseason and is a good bet to earn the starting nod in Week One. He’ll earn a good number of reps even when Brown gets back.

New England — WR Chad Jackson
Now that he’s healthy, Jackson has a very real chance of supplanting Jabar Gaffney as the Patriots’ No. 3 wide receiver. And as the Patriots have proved, their No. 3 receiver is capable of putting up very solid numbers. With his combination of size and speed, Jackson is primed to be a statistical beneficiary of Tom Brady’s precision passing.

N.Y. Jets — RB Leon Washington
Although he’s technically not the starter, there are those inside the organization who believe Washington is the Jets’ best running back. He’s a 5-foot-9 flash of lightning who’s capable of taking it to the house on any given play. With an improved offensive line, he should make a splash in the Big Apple.
