The last in a five-part series
Chiefs — open competition
The Chiefs’ kicking situation is an absolute mess. Billy Cundiff was signed earlier this offseason but then was cut loose in June, leaving the team with practically no experience at kicker. The Chiefs have signed journeyman Nick Novak and undrafted rookie Connor Barth thus far, and they surely will try out at least a few other legs this summer. In short, unless you’re playing in a kickers-only fantasy league, don’t even think about drafting the Chiefs’ PK.

Saints — Martin Gramatica vs. Taylor Mehlhaff
The kicking battle in New Orleans should be an interesting one. Martin Gramatica came to the team late in ’07 and played well, connecting on all five of his FG attempts. His experience might give him a slight edge, but he’ll receive some stiff competition from rookie Taylor Mehlhaff. A sixth-round pick out of Wisconsin, Mehlhaff has a very strong leg and consistently puts his kickoffs into the endzone. His accuracy, however, could be a question mark. Whoever emerges here could have some fantasy value playing in the Saints’ high-octane offense.
Seahawks — Olindo Mare vs. Brandon Coutu
The departure of Josh Brown leaves a huge hole in the Seahawks’ kicking game. Seattle signed Olindo Mare this spring to give them a veteran presence, but the former Dolphins standout is coming off a poor 2007 season. He connected on just 10-of-17 FG attempts in his lone campaign in New Orleans and looks to be on the downside of his career. His opposition will be rookie Brandon Coutu, a seventh-rounder from Georgia. Coutu has terrific range and was seen by many as the top kicker in this draft; only injury concerns prevented him from being taken higher. This is a battle to watch closely, as the winner will be in a good spot to put up points.
