Pennington signs with former rival Dolphins
Aug. 9, 2008
Chad Pennington wasn’t out of work for long.
The 32-year-old former Jets quarterback signed a two-year, $11.5 million contract with Miami late Friday, a source who requested anonymity told The Associated Press. Pennington had been released by the Jets on Thursday, less than 24 hours after they had acquired Brett Favre in a trade with Green Bay.
Pennington is expected to have a good shot at winning the Dolphins’ starting QB job, for which journeyman Josh McCown had been the front-runner.
Pennington is reunited with Dolphins executive vice president of football operations Bill Parcells, who drafted the quarterback 18th overall in 2000 when Parcells was the Jets’ general manager. Ironically, Pennington could face his former team in Week One, when the Dolphins host the Jets.
Pennington is the NFL's all-time career leader in completion percentage (.656) among passers with at least 1,500 attempts.
