The Browns have hired ex-Jets head coach Eric Mangini as their new head coach. Mangini, 37, was 23-25 in three seasons in New York. He was fired on Dec. 29, the same day the Browns let head coach Romeo Crennel go after four seasons on the job. Romeo Crennel
|
The Browns fired head coach Romeo Crennel on Monday, the second major move made by owner Randy Lerner in consecutive days as he overhauls his football operations. Crennel, who was 24-40 in four seasons on the job, was fired 11 months to the day of signing a contract extension through the 2011 season and one day after the Browns fired general manager Phil Savage. But when ... More>Dec. 1, 2008 Injuries to Anderson, Winslow put Browns' offense in tough spot Updated 5:14 p.m. EST Monday, Dec. 1
Browns QB Derek Anderson will likely miss the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury in Cleveland's 10-6 loss to Indianapolis on Sunday. Anderson suffered a tear in the medial collateral ligament in his left knee, the club announced Monday. The injury will not require surgery, but the expected recovery time is 4-6 weeks, according to the Browns. The injury to Anderson means Ken Dorsey will make his first NFL start in three seasons. Dorsey ... More> NovemberNov. 24, 2008 Crennel sticks with Quinn as Browns' quarterback Browns head coach Romeo Crennel reaffirmed Monday that QB Brady Quinn, not Derek Anderson, will start Sunday vs. Indianapolis. Crennel pulled Quinn in favor of Anderson in the Browns' 16-6 loss to Houston on Sunday, saying he was looking for a "spark" on offense and that Quinn's injured right index finger was a factor in the decision. Quinn, who completed 8-of-18 passes for 94 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions, was surprised by the benching. "I didn’t ... More> Nov. 3, 2008 Quinn replaces Anderson as Browns starting QB Brady Quinn will get a chance to turn around the Browns' offense. The Browns announced Monday that Quinn, the much-heralded former Notre Dame star, will replace Derek Anderson at quarterback on Thursday night vs. Denver. Inconsistency has plagued Anderson all season, and after an uneven performance in a draining loss vs. Baltimore on Sunday, the change was made. Anderson, who signed a lucrative three-year contract extension in the offseason, could not build off of a breakout '07 ... More> Nov. 3, 2008 Plenty of reasons for Browns' collapse vs. Baltimore With 6:07 left in the third quarter on Sunday, the Browns held a 27-13 lead vs. the visiting Ravens, and even the most hard-boiled, pessimistic Cleveland supporter had to like the home team’s chances. The Browns were having little difficulty moving the ball through the air on the Ravens’ defense, and the Ravens’ offense had gone almost two quarters without scoring a touchdown. A win would move Cleveland to 4-4 and would drop Baltimore to that same record, ... More> OctoberOct. 27, 2008 Browns, Winslow trying to move on The Browns and TE Kellen Winslow are trying to move on after the events of last week after the club suspended, then reinstated (but kept inactive) Winslow for Sunday's game at Jacksonville. Winslow's suspension was overturned when it reportedly was learned a club employee had discouraged Winslow from disclosing that he had a staph infection, and the matter seemed to be nearing closure. But GM Phil Savage, speaking after the Browns' 23-17 win at Jacksonville, spoke again of ... More> Oct. 21, 2008 Browns suspend TE Winslow for one game

Kellen Winslow
|
The Browns reacted strongly to TE Kellen Winslow's harsh criticism of general manager Phil Savage and the Browns' organization after Sunday's loss to Washington, suspending Winslow for one game without pay for conduct detrimental to the team. Winslow accused Savage of not showing enough concern for his condition after the tight end was hospitalized with a staph infection before the club's Week Six game vs. the Giants (a game that ... More>Oct. 20, 2008 Browns' offense sputters again in defeat The excitement about the Browns' 35-14 win vs. the Giants one week ago Monday is gone, replaced by consternation after Cleveland could muster only 236 yards and 11 points in a loss at Washington. Now 2-4, the Browns were again hurt by inconsistent play in the passing game. QB Derek Anderson, who played so well vs. the Giants, completed only 14-of-37 passes for 136 yards. Of course, it didn't help that WR Braylon Edwards dropped as ... More> Oct. 20, 2008 Browns, TE Winslow at odds Browns TE Kellen Winslow revealed Sunday that a staph infection was the reason he missed the Week Six game vs. the Giants, and he claimed that general manager Phil Savage didn't show enough concern about his well-being when Winslow was fighting the infection. "I heard from [head coach] Romeo Crennel and I heard from my position coach [Alfredo Roberts] when I was in the [Cleveland] Clinic," Winslow told The Cleveland Plain Dealer. "I heard from my teammates. ... More> SeptemberSept. 29, 2008 Browns QB Anderson staves off Quinn, but tough schedule looms Browns head coach Romeo Crennel admitted he contemplated pulling QB Derek Anderson in favor of Brady Quinn when the Cleveland offense sputtered for the better part of three quarters at lowly Cincinnati on Sunday, but Crennel didn’t make the move, and Anderson helped lead the Browns to a 20-12 victory. The moment of truth, Crennel indicated, was when Anderson, with the Browns on the Bengals' 32, threw an interception on the first drive of the third quarter. ... More> Sept. 22, 2008 With Browns sliding, Anderson's job security in doubt The Browns are 0-3 after losing 28-10 at Baltimore on Sunday, and there is mounting speculation QB Derek Anderson, all of three games into a three-year, $24 million contract, might lose his job to Brady Quinn at some point. On Monday, Browns head coach Romeo Crennel said Quinn would start to get more work in practice, a sign that the coach's patience with his starter had worn thin.

LeCharles Bentley

If C LeCharles Bentley is to complete a remarkable recovery from a serious left knee injury — and complications from a staph infection suffered during a surgery to repair the knee — it will be somewhere other than Cleveland. The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer reported Wednesday that Bentley had requested and received his release from the Browns. Bentley, 28, had missed the last two seasons and was expected to be, at ... In recent years, the Browns have been one of the more active teams at the start of free agency. This year is no different. On the first day of the signing period, the Browns reportedly agreed to a three-year contract with restricted free-agent QB Derek Anderson. According to The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer, Anderson will receive up to $26 million if he plays out the three-year contract. Also, ... More>JanuaryJan. 7, 2008 Browns sign Chudzinski to two-year contract extension The Browns signed offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski to a two-year contract extension on Monday, a move that keeps Chudzinski signed through 2011 and takes him out of play for the Ravens' head-coaching vacancy. In a statement, Chudzinski thanked the Ravens for their interest but said that staying in Cleveland was the "best decision for me both personally and professionally.
