With such a stacked roster, the Colts have had little need to hurry in signing their draft picks. On Tuesday, just two days before the team is set to report to Rose-Hulman Institute in Terre Haute, Ind., for training camp, the team announced it inked sixth-round WR Pierre Garcon, its first rookie to sign on.
Garcon hails from Division III powerhouse Mount Union, and is hoping to become the rare D-III product to make an NFL roster. At 6-0, 210 pounds with 4.45 speed in the 40, he has the physical makeup to do so. Although he showed glimpses of becoming a solid punt and kickoff returner in college and in post-season all-star games, the Colts intend on getting him adjusted to the WR position before entrusting him with return duties.
In PFW’s 2008 Draft Preview book, PFW draft analyst Nolan Nawrocki writes that Garcon is “very competitive. Has good strength and functional speed. Catches the ball underneath in stride.”
On the negative side, he notes that Garcon “shows some tightness in his movements and struggles to adjust to poorly thrown balls.”
