The Jaguars’ offseason goal of pumping up their passing game suffered a setback when free-agent acquisition Jerry Porter underwent surgery Thursday to repair a torn hamstring. He will miss all of training camp and the preseason.
A Jaguars press release said “Porter could return for the regular-season opener on Sept. 7” at Tennessee.
Porter was Jacksonville’s marquee free-agent signing this year, agreeing to a contract worth $30 million over six years, including $10 million in guaranteed bonuses. He hurt his hamstring during early spring practices and sat out the rest of the organized team activities. The team had hoped the tear would heal with rest, but Porter became concerned about his slow recovery, and further tests convinced doctors to operate.
Other members of the Jaguars’ WR corps include Reggie Williams, Dennis Northcutt, second-year man Mike Walker (coming off knee surgery), underachieving Matt Jones, John Broussard and D’Juan Woods.
