DecemberDec. 4, 2008 Jaguars lose CB Mathis for rest of season The Jaguars placed CB Rashean Mathis on injured reserve on Thursday, ending his season. Mathis went down with a sprained MCL in Monday’s loss to the Texans, the Jags’ third consecutive loss, dropping them to 4-8. Although the injury will not require surgery, there was little incentive in rushing Mathis back onto the field. Mathis holds the franchise record with 25 career interceptions, and has hauled in a team-best four in 2008. He’s expected to ... More> NovemberNov. 17, 2008 Jaguars not yet out of wild-card picture It was a tale of two halves for the Jaguars in Sunday’s loss to the Titans. In the first half, they appeared to be the team that would put a close to the Titans’ bid for perfection, jetting out to a 14-3 lead of halftime in 30 minutes of play that saw them do little wrong. They outgained Tennessee 173 yards to 128 and held a 14-4 advantage in first downs.
After the intermission, however, ... More> OctoberOct. 27, 2008 Suspension could derail strong season for WR Jones Maybe his arrest during the summer on felony cocaine charges was the kick in the pants he needed. Maybe it’s been a more natural maturation process. Maybe it’s his taking to offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter’s system in Year Two. Whatever the reason, Jaguars WR Matt Jones is playing like a man on a mission, looking nothing like the underachieving slouch who went through the motions of his first three seasons in the NFL after being ... More> Oct. 6, 2008 Jaguars' revived pass rush silver lining in loss Those Cardiac Cats in Jacksonville were on the wrong side of yet another scintillating game on Sunday, losing in the final minutes to the Steelers, 26-21. Jacksonville now has played five games in 2008, all of which were decided by a touchdown or less. And although Sunday’s loss dropped them to 2-3, there’s finally reason to believe that these close calls soon will be swinging in the Jaguars’ favor. The proof is found in the defensive trenches. ... More> SeptemberSept. 29, 2008 Jaguars have Garrard to thank for Sunday's victory David Garrard’s numbers won’t take your breath away. He completed a nice 23-of-32 passes for 236 yards and a touchdown against the Texans Sunday. He ran seven times for 41 yards and a touchdown. And without him, the Jags would’ve lost, instead of escaping with a 30-27 victory in overtime. And they wouldn’t have won without him last week against the Colts either, when his pedestrian 167 passing yards — with an interception and without ... More> Sept. 22, 2008 RB duo takes advantage of Colts' defensive issues With OGs Maurice Wiliams and Vince Manuwai out for the season, many figured the Jaguars were headed south. Or, at least, the running game would be headed south. But RBs Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew ensured that the Jags would start to climb out of the AFC South cellar, combining for 228 yards on the ground and another 68 through the air in Sunday’s 23-21, down-to-the-wire victory over division nemesis Indianapolis.

The Jaguars infused their stagnant passing game with an element of life Friday, agreeing to terms with free-agent WR Jerry Porter. A source confirmed to PFW that Porter signed a six-year deal worth $30 million, with $10 million guaranteed. Porter had 44 receptions for 705 yards and six touchdowns in 16 games with the Raiders in 2007, and he will immediately become a go-to receiver for ... More>JanuaryJan. 7, 2008 CB Mathis key to Jaguars' defensive game plan vs. Patriots If the Jaguars are going to pull off a monumental upset and beat the Patriots in the divisional round on Saturday in Foxborough, Mass., CB Rashean Mathis needs to come up big. Just like QB David Garrard is the most critical offensive player for the Jags, Mathis will be thrust into the defensive limelight. Mathis came up big in the Jags’ wild-card victory over the Steelers, picking off Ben Roethlisberger twice, returning one of the ... More>
