The Chargers fired defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell on Tuesday, replacing him with ILB coach Ron Rivera.
Heavy preseason favorites to win the AFC West, the 3-5 Chargers rank last in the league in passing defense and 28th in total defense, allowing 371.6 yards per game. They trail the Broncos by 1½ games in the division.
