Chargers TE Antonio Gates, who underwent offseason surgery after injuring his toe in last season's playoffs, was removed from the physically unable to perform list Tuesday and participated in practice for the first time this season.
Gates took part in some work but was withheld from team drills. He said he really pushed himself and came out feeling pretty good after practice, which marked the first time he had put on pads since the AFC Championship Game at New England.
Gates did not know if he would practice again Wednesday or if he'd play in either of San Diego's final two preseason games. He remains strongly optimistic that he'll be ready for the team's Sept. 7 opener against the Panthers.
Also returning to practice Tuesday were DE Luis Castillo (back) and CB Antonio Cromartie (ankle, wrist).
