Chargers extend contracts of LB Tucker, S Gregory

The Chargers signed LB Jyles Tucker to a five-year extension and extended S Steve Gregory for four years on Monday.
Tucker was originally signed by the Chargers as an undrafted rookie last season. He was activated for the team's final six games and played well, recording 3.5 sacks and 12 tackles.
Tucker is the backup to LB Shawne Merriman, and his extension could suggest that the team is more concerned about Merriman's damaged knee than they are letting on. Merriman could be sidelined for all of 2008 if he undergoes reconstructive surgery, meaning Tucker would become a full-time starter.
Gregory joined the Chargers as an undrafted rookie in 2006. He is the primary backup to SS Clinton Hart, but he's been mainly a special-teams contributor in his first two seasons.
