Chargers LB Shawne Merriman, who had cartilage damage repaired in his knee five months ago, headed back to consult with his surgeon Tuesday because of "persistent knee pain," according to the North County Times.
Merriman was operated on in the offseason by the renowned Dr. James Andrews. The linebacker flew back to Birmingham, Alabama, this week for what the team called a "follow-up exam" with Andrews.
The extent of Merriman's knee pain is not known, but he has been relegated to side work during numerous practices to protect him from contact. He's expected to rejoin the team on Thursday.
