New coordinator Rivera must revitalize Chargers' underachieving 'D'

The Chargers fired defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell on Tuesday, replacing him with ILB coach Ron Rivera.

Heavy preseason favorites to win the AFC West, the 3-5 Chargers rank last in the league in passing defense and 28th in total defense, allowing 371.6 yards per game. They trail the Broncos by 1½ games in the division.

Chargers LB Merriman to have knee surgery, done for the season

Chargers LB Shawne Merriman told the team Tuesday that he will undergo reconstructive surgery to repair two torn knee ligaments. He will be placed on injured reserve later this week and will miss the remainder of the season.

Tomlinson felt 'helpless' as knee prevented him from contributing in loss to Pats

In the days leading up to the AFC championship game, it was widely believed LaDainian Tomlinson was the healthiest of the Chargers’ three offensive stars, including QB Philip Rivers (knees) and TE Antonio Gates (dislocated toe).
