Scouting reports on Redskins' 2005 draft selections
Below you'll find excerpts from PFW's 2005 Draft Preview by Nolan Nawrocki. The 200-page book also provides in-depth notes and a summary on each of the nearly 500 prospects profiled in the book. The book can be purchased at PFWstore.com in either print or electronic format. It will provide a handy reference as the 2005 NFL season approaches.
Carlos Rogers
Positives: Four-year starter with ideal measureables. Very good athletic ability. Regained confidence as a senior and stepped up in big games. Good closing speed and can make up for lost ground when he gets out of position. Pretty good route recognition. Best when the ball is in front of him in zone coverage. Physical in press coverage and will come up hard to support the run. Physical tackler. Will play hurt. Has a 40 1/2-inch vertical jump.
Negatives: Inconsistent. Plays to the boundary and gets exposed in space. Not a great tackler. Shows some stiffness in his hips and takes too many false steps on his plant and drive. Doesn’t get out of his breaks cleanly. Does not have great ball skills. Needs to improve in man coverage and will get beat when he is challenged. Not a shutdown corner.
Jason Campbell
Positives: Outstanding size. Nice overhand delivery and high release point. Adequate arm strength. Can make all the throws between the hashes. Sets his feet quickly. Saw the field much better as a senior, made good reads and accuracy improved greatly. Improved poise as a senior and looked much more comfortable in the pocket. Athletic enough to avoid rush. Very durable. Solid worker. Career 64.6 percent passer.
Negatives: Very inconsistent during his first three years and found success as a senior in a simplified offense. Has a long throwing motion and will give NFL defensive backs too much time to break on the ball. Struggles to throw the deep out and relies on receivers to adjust to bad balls. Does not step into his throws and struggles throwing with touch. Is slow to go through his progression reads and will hold onto the ball too long at times. Not a natural leader. Has a tendency to throw off his back foot instead of driving through. Loses accuracy on the move and needs to improve footwork outside the pocket. Will get chased down by big-bodied defensive tackles from behind and doesn’t see pressure coming. Benefited from Auburn’s strong running attack and extra defenders stacked in the box.
