Williams’ neck injury leaves Vikings thin at safety
Aug. 12, 2008
Vikings FS Madieu Williams, one of the team’s big free-agent signings this offseason, is expected to miss about six weeks with what is being called a neck injury.
How serious the injury is the team won’t say, but Williams likely will miss as much as the first three games of the regular season.
Williams didn’t play in the team’s preseason opener on Friday against the Seahawks with what the Vikings called neck spasms. He was replaced in the starting lineup by Tyrell Johnson, the team’s top draft pick.
Johnson figures to start, but Williams’ coverage ability will be missed. SS Darren Sharper was expected to play more up in the box, but with the rookie Johnson playing aside him, Sharper might be asked to stay back in coverage more.
