Vikings bench Jackson in favor of Frerotte for Sunday

Sept. 17, 2008
After Sunday’s loss, Vikings head coach Brad Childress said he supported his quarterback. On Tuesday, Childress left the door open for a possible change at the position. On Wednesday, Childress confirmed it — Gus Frerotte will start Sunday against the Panthers at home, the Minneapolis-St. Paul Tribune first reported.
The 13-year vet will replace Jackson, who has completed 30-of-59 passes for 308 yards with one touchdown, one interception and one lost fumble. Jackson was picked off to end a potential game-winning drive in Week One’s loss at Green Bay, and he struggled down the stretch against the Colts.
Frerotte started three games last season for the Rams, throwing for six touchdowns and 781 yards in those games but also 10 interceptions. In the preseason for the Vikings this year, Frerotte completed 21-of-35 passes for 262 yards with one TD and one interception. He has yet to take a regular-season snap in 2008.
Jackson’s game Sunday was his 16th career start, and he has an 8-8 record in those games, but he has lost his past four starts dating back to the end of last season when the Vikings were making a run at the playoffs.
Childress said, barring injury, Frerotte should be the starter for the remainder of the season but added that he hasn't given up on Jackson.
