The Saints have agreed to terms with PK Taylor Mehlhaff, a sixth-round pick out of Wisconsin, on a three-year contract, according to a report by PFW correspondent Mike Triplett, who is a beat writer for the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
Mehlhaff is expected to compete with Martin Gramatica to become the team’s kicker, though sources have said both players could make the roster, with one handling field-goal duties and the other serving as a kickoff specialist.
In Pro Football Weekly’s 2008 Draft Preview book, PFW draft analyst Nolan Nawrocki wrote that Mehlhaff gets good lift and rise on his kicks, but has a slow approach and may best fit as a kickoff specialist.
