Inexperienced Waters impresses Chargers

July 13, 2008

Chargers coaches and players have been raving about second-year LB Anthony Waters this offseason. A torn ACL cost Waters his entire rookie season, but the third-round pick spent time learning the defense and now is ready to contribute. With LB Stephen Cooper having been suspended for the first four games of '08, Waters figures to see a lot of playing time early.

Looking to find skilled blockers for his power rushing attack, new Chiefs offensive coordinator Chan Gailey may insert rookie TE Brad Cottam into the starting lineup. With the team lacking a quality fullback, we hear Gailey might opt for a lot of two-TE sets, using Cottam's blocking talents to help open up running lanes.

Sources in Denver say Broncos WR Samie Parker needs to carve out a role in the passing game fairly quickly if he wants to make the team. With Brandon Marshall, Keary Colbert, Darrell Jackson, Eddie Royal and Brandon Stokley appearing to be roster locks, Parker could very well be the odd man out by the end of training camp.

We hear Raiders C Jake Grove is making progress in his rehab from a knee injury, but he faces some tough competition in a three-way battle with John Wade and Chris Morris to become the starting center. Grove, a second-round pick in 2004, has been highly touted as a key figure on the O-line by head coach Lane Kiffin this offseason.
